Daniel Leonidas plays ikembe at the Friends of Traditional Music Event

One of the goals of MRC is to promote refugee musicians and artisans and we had an opportunity to do just this on this past Friday- April 2 at the Friends of Traditional Music Event at Ruta Maya Coffeehouse.  Daniel Leonidas is a 72-year old refugee from Burundi who has been playing the ikembe, a traditional instrument from East Africa, for over 50 years.  He has had the privilege to play with great Austin musicians such as Ralph White and Joel Laviolette and was featured in this ikembe/kalimba showcase on Friday.  He played 4 songs and earned some extra money which is essential for him since he is not able to work.  While the money was a great benefit to him, the great joy that was displayed by the smile on his face was priceless.   If you would like to learn more about Daniel or have him play at any of your events please contact us at info@mrcaustin.org and we can tell you more about him.

*** Also- as you can see by the quality of this photo- MRC is in great need of a new camera to document our events and programs.  If you would like to contribute to this please consider making a donation on our website at http://www.mrcaustin.org/donate.
