MRC Celebrates World Refugee Day

Every year on June 20th World Refugee Day is celebrated around the world bringing awareness to the refugee situation and the 40 million people that have been uprooted from their homes.  The theme for this year’s World Refuge Day is “Home” and is so beautifully represented in the UNHCR poster below stating “They Took My Home But They Can’t Take My Future”.

Every year Austin welcomes approximately 1,000 refugees as they settle into their new home.  MRC works to ease this transition by providing a sense of community through our center which is a gathering spot to share resources, learn something new (sewing and computer skills) and work towards their future in planning for jobs, education etc.  We invite you to get involved in welcoming these refugees and helping them secure a better future for themselves.

One way to do this is to serve as a job mentor on Thursday evenings or Saturday afternoons at our community center in NE Austin or by making a donation to our job development program to improve the services we are able to offer in this area (www.mrcaustin.org/donate).
