On June 26th, Austin Area Refugee Providers along with the Bob Bullock State History Museum hosted the annual World Refugee Day celebration and this year was our best year yet. MRC was grateful to be a part of such a great planning team including the museum, Refugee Services of Texas, Austin Area Interreligious Ministries, Central Texas Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, Amala Foundation, Esther Diaz and Centers for the Survivors of Torture.
The day began with a citizenship ceremony honoring 26 new citizens who originally came to this country as refugees. The Daily Texan covered the ceremony and has a great article about it here: http://www.dailytexanonline.com/content/refugees-celebrate-fresh-start-us.
There were educational opportunities, kids activities, family photographs by Chris Carson Photography, a raffle, Burmese karaoke, entertainment by refugee musicians, poets, and dancers ending with a fashion show. Megan Schiebe (www.travelvolunteersearch.com) was our wonderful emcee for the day.
We are thankful for our wonderful board members and volunteers who contributed to making this a beautiful day for all.
