One of the goals of MRC was to form a refugee soccer team and this became a reality when we met Coach Hassan Gateh from Iraq at our community center. Hassan has coached both adult and youth teams in Iraq and Lebanon and was excited to be a part of starting a team in his new city of Austin!
It has been a challenge to find a free place to practice soccer so he started playing at an abandoned field near his house. The field was pretty overgrown but it was a free place to play.
One of our MRC volunteers Casey Kasper and his brother Colin came to the rescue and spent 2 long days mowing the field AND making soccer goals to turn this abandoned area into a true soccer field.
The group was absolutely thrilled to have a much better place to practice and the soccer team continues to grow! So far we have participants from Sudan, Iraq, Congo, Bhutan and Afghanistan.
We are trying to raise enough funds to pay Coach Hassan and enroll our MRC Refugee Team in the Austin Mens Soccer Association this fall. Will you please consider making a donation to this program to make this team a reality? Donations can be made on our secure site at http://www.mrcaustin.org/donate.html. or can be mailed to 1701 Brackenridge St. Austin 78704.
